Yukon was established as a separate territory in 1898, carved out of the Northwest Territories in response to the Klondike Gold Rush, which brought tens of thousands of prospectors to the region around Dawson City in the late 1890s. Whitehorse, on the Yukon River, is the territorial capital and by far the largest community today. Yukon's economy centres on mining, tourism, and government services, and the territory is home to Canada's highest peak, Mount Logan, in Kluane National Park. The premier is Currie Dixon.
