Alberta joined Confederation in 1905, carved out of the Northwest Territories together with Saskatchewan. Its economy is anchored by oil and gas, including the Athabasca oil sands near Fort McMurray, alongside agriculture and a growing technology sector in Calgary and Edmonton. Edmonton is the provincial capital and seat of government, while Calgary, home to the Calgary Stampede, is Alberta's largest city. The Rocky Mountains, including Banff and Jasper national parks, draw visitors from all over the world. Alberta has no provincial sales tax, a point of provincial pride, and is currently led by Premier Danielle Smith.
