The Northwest Territories became part of Canada in 1870, when the Hudson's Bay Company transferred Rupert's Land and the North-Western Territory to the new Dominion, forming the historical basis for what is now Canada's three northern territories. Yellowknife, on the shore of Great Slave Lake, is the territorial capital and largest community. The territory's economy has been shaped by diamond and other mineral mining, alongside oil and gas, and its population includes a significant proportion of Indigenous peoples, including Dene, Inuvialuit, and Métis communities. Unlike the provinces, territories do not have a Lieutenant Governor and their legislatures exercise powers delegated by the federal Parliament rather than inherent constitutional authority. The premier is R.J. Simpson.
