Nova Scotia was one of the four founding provinces of Confederation in 1867. Halifax, its capital and largest city, has one of the world's largest natural harbours and played a central role as a naval and shipping hub, including the response to the 1917 Halifax Explosion and its historic role receiving Titanic victims in 1912. The province's economy is built on fishing, shipbuilding, tourism, and a growing technology and ocean-sciences sector. Nova Scotia is almost entirely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, connected to New Brunswick only by the narrow Isthmus of Chignecto. The premier is Tim Houston.
