Newfoundland and Labrador was the last province to join Confederation, entering in 1949 after a closely contested referendum on whether to join Canada or remain a separate British dominion. St. John's, its capital and largest city, is one of the oldest European-settled cities in North America. The province's economy was historically built on the cod fishery, which collapsed in the early 1990s, and has since diversified toward offshore oil production, including the Hibernia platform. Newfoundland English carries some of the most distinctive regional expressions in the country. The current premier is Tony Wakeham.
