British Columbia joined Confederation in 1871, four years after the original four provinces, on the condition that a transcontinental railway would connect it to the rest of Canada, a promise fulfilled with the completion of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1885. Victoria, on Vancouver Island, is the provincial capital, while Vancouver, on the mainland, is by far the largest city and one of Canada's main gateways to the Pacific and to Asia. The province's economy rests on forestry, technology, film production, tourism, and trade through the Port of Vancouver. British Columbia's mountainous, coastal geography, including the Rockies and the Pacific rainforest, shapes both its economy and its identity. The current premier is David Eby.
