Ontario was one of the four founding provinces of Confederation in 1867 and today is Canada's most populous province by a wide margin. Toronto is the provincial capital, Canada's largest city, and its main financial centre, while Ottawa, on Ontario's side of the Ottawa River, is the national capital of Canada.
