Eligibility Requirements for Canadian Citizenship

To become a Canadian citizen through the standard grant process, you need to meet several separate requirements at the same time: permanent resident status, enough time physically living in Canada, up-to-date taxes, and, for most applicants, language and knowledge requirements.

1. Permanent Resident Status

You must be a permanent resident of Canada, and that status must not be currently under review for potential loss (for example, due to a misrepresentation investigation or removal order).

2. Physical Presence Requirement

You need at least 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada within the 5 years immediately before you apply. Time spent outside Canada during that 5-year window does not count, even short trips, so keep a record of your travel dates.

3. Other Core Criteria

• Filed Canadian income taxes, if required to do so, for at least 3 of the 5 years before applying
• Meet the language requirement (English or French at CLB/NCLC level 4 or higher) if you are between 18 and 54 years old
• Pass the citizenship knowledge test if you are between 18 and 54 years old
• Have no relevant criminal prohibitions, such as being currently charged with, or having recently been convicted of, certain offences

4. Additional Notes

Requirements can change, and Bill C-3 (in force since December 2025) specifically affects citizenship by descent, not the standard grant process described above.
