That total is made up of two separate fees IRCC charges together: a processing fee and a right of citizenship fee. Minor children applying at the same time as a parent pay a separate, lower combined fee. Rates changed on March 31, 2026, so older guides quoting a total of $649.75 CAD (or $630 CAD before April 2025) are out of date.

Is the fee refundable?
The processing fee is generally non-refundable even if your application is refused, since it covers the cost of reviewing your file. The right of citizenship fee is paid together with the processing fee when you apply, and is refunded if your application is refused or if you withdraw it before taking the Oath of Citizenship.
What about minor children?
A minor (under 18) pays a separate, lower fee of $100 CAD, which includes the processing fee, and is not charged the right of citizenship fee on top (IRCC fee list, checked October 17, 2026). Check the current fee schedule on canada.ca before applying, since fees are adjusted periodically.
Other costs to budget for
The application fee is rarely the only cost. Depending on your situation, you may also need to budget for translation of documents, replacement identity documents, courier or notary fees, and travel to a Service Canada location for biometrics or an interview.
